A number of folks utilize restless leg syndrome home remedies as a way to dampen the symptoms of their restless legs without turning to drugs for treatment. Since most medical practitioners believe that RLS is a neuropathic disease, those home remedies for restless legs that are thought to directly or indirectly influence the chemistry of the brain and the central nervous system seem to be the most popular.
Perhaps the first step in choosing an appropriate home remedy is ensuring that what you’re suffering from is indeed restless legs syndrome, and not leg cramps or some other form of pain
Restless Leg Syndrome Symptoms
It’s important for a proper diagnosis to understand the various restless leg syndrome symptoms. Unfortunately, the symptoms are as varied as those who experience them. Symptoms of RLS may include:
- pins and needles
- antsy sensations
If you, or someone you’re trying to help complains of any of these symptoms, particularly while resting, relaxing or trying to fall asleep at night, it is quite possible they are suffering from restless leg syndrome.
However, perhaps the most common description of the condition can be summed up as, “an irresistible urge to move”. while sleeping this can manifest as involuntary leg jerks or spasms, but while awake the person will be quite conscious of the symptoms.
Restless Leg Syndrome Treatment
Restless leg syndrome treatment will vary, depending on the severity of the case, the lifestyle and habits of the sufferer, and your personal healthcare choices. Some people find relief with traditional pharmaceuticals or drugs and find the side effects negligible or worth it.
For others, homeopathic remedies provide relief. Supplements, natural remedies, massage, yoga, meditation, massage, stretching and special exercises are also popular methods of coping for those with RLS.
Restless Leg Syndrome Natural Remedies
Natural Remedies applies in this case to anything that is not classified as a prescribed pharmaceutical, or over the counter drug.
Natural Restless Leg Syndrome Home Remedies – Exercise
Perhaps the most common of all the RLS home remedies is exercise. After all, you are already experiencing an “irresistible urge to move”. :-)
Unfortunately, the most common times sufferers experience the symptoms of restless legs, are times when exercising would be inappropriate; in a theater, at a long meeting, late night dinner out, long airplane rides, while relaxing in the evening, and of course while trying to sleep.
Many physicians and patients alike report that light daily exercise helps to lessen the symptoms of restless legs many say to avoid extra strenuous exercise as it may increase the likelihood of RLS attacks.
I can’t refute their findings for the majority of sufferers, but before discovering the secrets behind RLS18, my special, drug-free, “home remedy” was a series of exercises designed to push some of the major involved muscle groups past the point of fatigue to ‘muscle failure’.
By doing this when I’m woken up by a spell of restless legs I give my body a chance to fall back asleep before my muscles have recovered enough to begin wanting to respond to the signals my brain is involuntarily sending to my legs.
Tonic Water and Restless Leg Syndrome
Some people have reported that tonic water helps with their RLS. While I’ve seen this reported on some blogs and forums and around the internet, my personal belief is that they are either:
- not actually suffering from RLS, but some other ailment, or
- reporting the benefit of avoiding painful leg cramping associated with nocturnal periodic leg movement disorder (PLMD).
Quinine, which is in tonic water, has long been used by physicians to ease cramping of major muscles — often in the legs.
Periodic leg movement disorder is often associated with RLS. Quick involuntary jerking and spasms in the legs can lead to cramping, especially in people who are taking medications for other ailments that are leaving them depleted of certain vitamins or minerals like potassium or salt.
Doctors, for the most part, have stopped prescribing quinine pills due to other complications.
That said, if you are suffering and tonic water can relieve your symptoms it’s a great non-toxic home remedy for restless legs syndrome.
Restless Leg Syndrome Home Remedies Soap
Personally, I love this home remedy. The idea that putting soap in the foot of your bed, under the fitted sheet, but on top of the mattress would have any effect on restless legs is pretty cool. From what I’ve read there is no known reason why this should or could work, other than a placebo effect, however it seems to — for some.
People have even gone so far as to test the idea on their spouse without his or her knowledge.
There also seems to be some correlation between the age of the soap (fresher soap works better).
It’s unclear whether or not anyone will ever sponsor a peer reviewed double-blind study to evaluate the effects of soap in the bed reducing the symptoms of RLS or not.
However, for what it’s worth, a lot of the anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that it helps mostly with leg pain, and nocturnal leg cramping, which is quite different from RLS. So, maybe soap should be called a natural home remedy for leg pain and cramping.
Restless Leg Syndrome Medication
Once you’ve exhausted all the home remedies, and other ‘natural’ cures for your restless legs symptoms, there are drugs available that give some sufferers relief.
I’ve compiled a list of most of the known restless leg syndrome medication at the link. I’ve included known side effects in cases where relevant, because depending on the severity of your symptoms and how disruptive to your life it is, the cure might be worse than the disease.
The Limits of Home Remedies for Restless Legs
If you’re suffering from a case too severe for traditional home remedies, or think that they’d laugh at you in the board room if you started doing leg raises to failure, and aren’t ready to deal with the unwanted side effects of the current crop of RLS drugs, RLS18 might be an option for you.
RLS18 is unique in that it is a 100% natural, FAST-ACTING alternative, that be taken discretely and can eliminate your restless leg symptoms in as little as 18 minutes. If you’re interested in learning more you can click here
